A variation of the 'Ladder'' format you already have but could your consider a Pyramid competition format as described here - https://goo.gl/ZQHfNv

Essentially Players in a row challenge any player in the row above them, if the lower player wins, they swap positions. The aim is to work up the pyramid and be at the top when the competition expires.
